What’s cookin’ in La Paz

peru-bolivia-126.jpgLa Paz, at 3,360 meters above sea level (that’s 2 and half times as high as Denver, Colorado), is not an easy place to cook. Altitute affects how long it takes to cook quinoa–and believe me, after a stomach-rumbling hour of waiting, I learned the hard way. peru-bolivia-004.jpgI wandered the market at Villa Fatima, and here, for about $2.15, is what I came up with. The spotty potatoes were thrown in as a bonus when I explained to the chulita that I loved vegetables. (Ai, senorita, que lindas son sus veduritas! is probably not a common compliment.)

If cooking takes too long for you, the market at Plaza San Francisco is an excellent place to grab a bite. My favorite are the cheese bread empenadas and salty, fat boiled corn (my sister’s fave as well).

About Growing Chefs

Vegetarian and local and organic, oh my! Growing Chefs was founded in 2005 as a way to teach kids (and their parents!) about the delicious, wonderful ways in which food gets from the soil to the kitchen. Annie's love of plants is translated here into recipes using local ingredients and ideas from wherever she travels. Annie's philosophy is simple: "Broccoli is not boring!" Annie can be emailed at annie@growingchefs.org.
