What’s cookin’ in La Paz
La Paz, at 3,360 meters above sea level (that’s 2 and half times as high as Denver, Colorado), is not an easy place to cook. Altitute affects how long it takes to cook quinoa–and believe me, after a stomach-rumbling hour of waiting, I learned the hard way.
I wandered the market at Villa Fatima, and here, for about $2.15, is what I came up with. The spotty potatoes were thrown in as a bonus when I explained to the chulita that I loved vegetables. (Ai, senorita, que lindas son sus veduritas! is probably not a common compliment.)
If cooking takes too long for you, the market at Plaza San Francisco is an excellent place to grab a bite. My favorite are the cheese bread empenadas and salty, fat boiled corn (my sister’s fave as well).
